Chapter Twenty-Three

It felt as if it had been years since Daruss had held Jude while they slept. In reality it had only been a couple of weeks. He knew it wasn’t over. They had a lot to prove to each other.

Love wasn’t the issue but trust…yeah, they didn’t have that. Daruss wasn’t sure how to build it. He wasn’t sure how he’d earned it before everything had turned to shit. But he knew how he’d lost it. Not believing Jude had done some damage. He’d been honest with Jude. Jude could count on that at least. But was it good enough to get them to a better place?

Raylee had managed to move away from them. He’d even turned so he slept in the fetal position.

Daruss hooked an arm around Raylee’s middle, pulling him closer. He tried not to wake either of his boys but didn’t succeed with Raylee.

Raylee stiffened as if he wasn’t sure what was happening.

“You’re safe, boy.”

At the sound of Daruss’s voice, Raylee relaxed again. He grabbed Daruss’s hand, holding it to his chest.

Jude wiggled between them but put an arm around Raylee. He sighed as if content and settled again.

Raylee and Jude taking to each other could have gone the opposite way, or they might not have had any chemistry between them. The fact they did, and it was so recognizable, made Daruss feel good about his choice. He stopped questioning whether he was doing right by them. He could be pushy sometimes. The situation made it difficult to tell if they’d been attracted to each other or if they’d gone along with what Daruss wanted. But it seemed they gravitated toward each other all on their own. They hadn’t needed him to do anything. Jude turned so his cheek rested on the back of Raylee’s head. “Smells good,” he mumbled.

Daruss smiled. “Yeah, he does.”

“Coconut shampoo.” Raylee seemed content to lie there.

“Maybe. It’s also you. Something unique to you. Smells like hot sand.” It was hard to describe scents to a human. Their senses weren’t as sharp as a shifter’s. But Raylee smelled like the sunlight when it hit a sandy beach.

“I’m not sure that’s a compliment.” Raylee didn’t seem to mind if it wasn’t because he giggled.

“It’s a good thing, baby. You’re my sunshine boy.”

Jude kissed Raylee on his shoulder. “Mine too.”

“Are you even awake, Jude?” Raylee giggled again. It was a cute sound and one he hadn’t made before. Daruss had to wonder if maybe Raylee hid behind a smiling face. Were there dark clouds blocking some of his light? If so, Daruss would find it and kill whatever made Raylee unhappy.

“Sort of. I’m sweaty. You guys are like furnaces.” Jude kissed Raylee again, so Daruss kissed Jude. “I feel gross.”

“You’re not gross.” Daruss sniffed Jude’s hair.

“Do you want to shower? Dad’s bathroom is bigger than mine. He won’t care if we use it.” Raylee had a great idea. Daruss would love to get naked with his boys. It hadn’t happened with the three of them yet and it felt as if it were another step in the right direction.
